Testing And Replacing The Dryer Door Switch

Blog

One common problem with electric dryers that is often easily fixed is the door switch. When the door switch fails, the dryer might not turn on the first time you shut the door, it could stop running before the cycle is complete, and in some cases, it can turn on and off seemingly by itself. If you've noticed any of these issues occurring, it's time to test the door switch and replace it if needed. Here, you'll learn how to do just that.

Test the Switch

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Examine the door prong — the small metal piece located on the inside of the door that engages the switch on the dryer. If the prong is damaged, bent, or corroded, the switch will not perform as it should.
  3. Get a screwdriver and remove the switch from the dryer.
  4. Take a picture of the switch before disconnecting anything.
  5. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors attached to the latch.
  6. Tape the wires that connect the switch and the dryer to label them for easier reassembly.
  7. Test the switch using an ohmmeter. If the meter reads infinity, the switch is operating; if not, it needs to be replaced.

Replace the Door Switch

Replacement shouldn't take more than a few minutes on most machines. As long as you purchase the correct replacement switch, you'll be done and back to doing laundry in no time. Just be sure to use the make and model number to find the exact replacement and avoid any confusion. This information is typically found on the inside of the door or on the back of the unit.

If you aren't able to find an exact match online, take the part to your local appliance repair shop and request a replacement. This way, you can be sure that you'll be replacing the correct piece.

  1. Finish disconnecting and removing the old door switch.
  2. Connect the wires from the dryer to the new switch using the tape and photos to guide you.
  3. Tighten the connections and snap the switch in place.
  4. Close the dryer door, plug it in, and give it a test run.

Of course, some models of dryers will require a more complicated fix. If you are uncomfortable attempting this test and repair, you can contact your local appliance services technician for assistance. He or she will troubleshoot the machine, make the necessary recommendations and assist you with all repairs required to get your clothes drying again.
