When your clothes dryer stops working as it should, laundry can begin to back up very quickly. When you're washing laundry for a family of 4, 5, or 6, it only takes a few days before the piles begin to mount. So, before your piles turn into heaps, it's time to take a look at your dryer and figure out what's going on with it.
Very Long Drying Cycle
If your dryer is producing heat but the clothes still aren't drying, chances are, there is lint built up in the exhaust. Pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the vent pipe. Have your vacuum on hand because this is going to be a little messy. Disconnect the pipe from the wall. Lay it out flat. Look through the pipe—is it clogged? If so, get a broom and stick the handle down through the pipe to push the lint out the other end.
Now, check the vent point on the back of the dryer—is it clear of lint? If not, get the vacuum hose and stick it in there to suck out all of the lint. The last area to check is the point between the lint trap and the exhaust. This can be difficult to reach without the right tool. There are lint trap tools that attach to your vacuum. These long skinny pieces fit down into the lint trap and extend through the machine. It will suck all of the lint right up out of there.
After you've cleaned everything, put it all back together just as you removed it. Test the unit. Did this do the trick? If so, it's time that you write yourself a note and stick it on the side of the dryer to remember to empty the lint trap with each load—you'll avoid having quite as big of a mess if you keep up with it.
Not Heating
If the dryer is working but not heating, the problem could be the thermostat or heating elements. Unfortunately, this can be a complicated fix depending on the type of machine you have. Ultimately, it's best to call for help when it comes to diagnosing and repairing heating issues in the modern machines. This will prevent doing further damage as you test and troubleshoot your way to a fix.
