Preventing Water Intake Valve Problems In Your Washing Machine

Blog

Hard water is more damaging to the appliances that you use each day than you might think. If you've been having trouble with your washing machine not getting enough water or overflowing, the problem could be caused by the water flowing into it. Here, you'll find a few tips that can help you get your washing machine running efficiently again.

The Water Inlet Valve

The first thing to check when you have hard water is the water inlet valve. You see, as the water flows into the washing machine, it runs through the inlet valve. The inlet valve has small screens inside of it to catch debris before it goes into the rest of the system. Over time, those screens will become caked with debris and will prevent water from flowing into the washing machine. This could result in a complete failure of the unit, or it could cause damage to your clothes when the water that they're washed in is too hot for the fabric.

Clean the Valve

Before you go and order a replacement water inlet valve for your washing machine, you should try to clean the one that's failing. Chances are that you'll be able to break the sediment free from the screens and put the old inlet valve back into the washing machine for several more months or years of use.

To clean the valve, you'll need to remove it. Refer to your owner's manual to learn how to remove the valve. Once you remove it, inspect it closely. Get a bowl of white vinegar and soak the non-electronic parts of the valve for a day or two. The white vinegar will break down hard water and calcium deposits that are clogging up the screens. Use a bottle nipple brush to scrub the holes carefully, making sure that you don't damage the screens. Put it back in place and test the machine. If that worked – great – if not, you'll need to order a replacement.

Prevent Future Clogs

Don't put yourself through this again in the near future. Instead, get an inline water filter made for washing machines. This little gadget is connected to the water line before it is connected to the washing machine. It will filter out the debris that would normally clog the intake valve. When the inline water filter does clog, you just need to remove it, clean it, and put it back on.
